Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s coalition movement (CNM) isn’t a political party, but the Ogun powerful man is putting together one of the biggest threats to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2019 General Elections.

Obasanjo began the moment some months after writing an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, writing off his administration as a failure.
His letter awaken the consciousness of some Nigerians.

Since then Buhari has garnered more critics than before.

But Buhari looked unperturbed as he went ahead to clear his intention to run for 2019 presidential election.

Obasanjo on the other hand has been able to win the hearts of some powerful party members from the ruling APC, opposition PDP and other emerging parties.

Former Governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun, Donald Duke of Cross River have openly joined the CNM.

While some others are still supporting the coalition anonymously. They are still within APC, only ready to join the coalition when it finally evolved to a political party.

With the underground political calculations, can the coalition defeat Buhari in 2019?

“YES,” a former presidential spokesperson, Dr. Doyin Okupe, believes is optimistic that the political efforts of CNM could unseat Buhari and APC in 2019.

According to him, the CNM will present a candidate who will defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

The group has joined and been a powerful critic of the ruling APC. In some cases CNM attacked the personality of the president.

But Okupe, who was once described as a propagandist, said the group was not formed to either attack the Buhari government or to discredit the APC.

“It is absolutely impossible to oppose the incumbent especially a towering figure like President Muhammadu Buhari and hope to defeat him.

“To defeat Buhari will require an exact repeat of what Bola Tinubu and others were able to do with the APC in 2014 by creating a broad platform encompassing the political majority in the country,” the medical doctor said.

He said CNM was ready for the battle ahead since “it’s going to difficult to defeat an incumbent,” but “CNM was created as a broad platform with a view to presenting a candidate who will contest against Buhari with the hope of defeating the incumbent President.”

“This strong coalition will present a candidate to contest against Buhari with the hope of being able to win.”

He once again stated that Buhari-led government of APC hasn’t done well since it took over power about three years ago.

“We recognise the fact that the APC has not done well. We are convinced that the decision by Buhari to contest again will not augur well for the country. To allow the APC to win means Buhari will continue and that would not be in the interest of Nigerians,” he added.

We expect to see more dramas unfold across the 36 states of the federation and FCT as the entire country warms up for the 2019 General Elections.
