Melaye arraigned in Abuja court, granted N90million bail

Senator Dino Melaye was today arraigned by the Nigeria Police on allegations of escaping lawful arrest.

The controversial senator was produced at Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrate Court, FCT, Abuja, and granted a bail of N90 million.

Melaye has been in the news for weeks for turning down police invitation to answer questions about his involvement in arming political thugs in his home state, Kogi.

At a time, he threatened to sue Nigeria police, if they (police) failed to produce those who accused him of sponsoring violence in the state, after the culprits escaped from police custody.

Melaye had insisted that his life won’t be secured in Kogi, thereby asking for the transfer of the case to the FCT.

But the police said he must face trial in the state where he allegedly perpetrated the charges he’s accused of.

When he was finally arrested ,and being taken to Lokoja to face trail, Melaye jumped off from police vehicle, thereby injuring himself.

His lawyer alleged that there were plans to poison, or kill him on Kogi soil.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Report said he was chained to the hospital bed considering his antecedents.

The senator isn’t new to controversies. When he’s in the lower chamber of the National Assembly, he’s popular for leading several confrontations in the floor of the house.

While some Nigerias have hailed his trial, some of his supporters say he’s facing prosecution for stepping on toes of political heavyweights within the floor, and back in his home state.

We’ll keep you updated.

Is Dino Melaye being tried for offence he hasn’t committed before now ?
