But it wasn’t as usual.
The message was auto safety tips bothering on the recommended tyre pressure of our car.

The message reads:
Incessant tyre burst accidents on Nigerian roads
Many people have been wondering what could be the cause of the constant tyre burst on Nigerian roads, which have resulted to deadly accidents.
The major cause is that we put too much pressure in our tyres.
How did I know?
I was preparing for a journey, I changed some of my tyres and I asked the vulcanizer:
“What is the recommended tyre pressure?’
He said 50.
I said alright, he should inflate it to 50 all round.
When I got to where I was going, I was discussing with some people on the issue of the one of Nigeria’s minister that died on the road due to a burst tyre and wonder what could have happened because nobody could imagine a minister would be travelling with expired tyres as many would think is the major cause of tyre bursts.
A man (who lived in US for many years) said that the major cause of tyre burst in Nigeria is that we put too much pressure in our tyres and that each car has recommended tyre size and pressure clearly written on it by the manufacturer.
Where is recommended tyre pressure written in a vehicle?
I was surprised and begged him to come and show me where it’s written on my car.
To my greatest surprise, it’s by the driver’s door which I enter everyday without noticing it.
By the time we checked, the recommended pressure for my tyres is 32!
I just traveled with tyres on a pressure of 50!
He took me round his compound and showed me that of his cars (which includes a jeep and a sienna) there, the highest was 32.
Some were even 29!
Tyre expand at high temperature
He further explained that tyres are made of rubber and expand at high temperature.
So, when you are travelling in the afternoon when the asphalt on the road is hot, the tyre will want to expand.
If the pressure in the tyre is too much and wouldn’t accommodate the expansion, a burst is likely to happen at that time.

So the question is: How do I get the recommended tyre pressure?
I took a step further to ask google, as some of my friends would say, and the result I got looks super informative.
I landed on motoring about, an auto news and information web.
There are three ways to find the correct tyre pressure for your vehicle.
1 Check the driver side door frame
Not everyone knows that the recommended tyre pressure is by the driver’s door.”There is usually a sticker on the driver side door frame that will include the manufacturers recommended tyre pressure guide. If there is no a sticker check the glove box.”

2 Check the owners manual
I’m sure not every car owners here have their car manual. If they do, how many of them take their time to read through it anyway?
What is it to learn from car manual when I’ve been driving for decades?
But car manual is an archive of useful info about your car, take your time to read it if you have one.
“The owners manual holds all the info you need about your car and within the tre/wheels section you should find the manufacturer recommended tyre pressure.”
3 Google it!
Another way to get the recommended tyre pressure is to head straight to Google, or any other search engine of your choice, Bing is another one.
With easy access and affordable data to the internet Googling the car make, model and year could be the easiest of them all.
You can use any of the following search strings:
“Correct tyre pressure for Toyota hybrid”
“Tyre pressure for Honda civic”
“Recommended tyre pressure for Toyota camry” on and on…
In my own case, I used “Toyota tyre pressure” as my search key words and I landed on toyota.co.uk blog blog.toyota.co.uk/Toyota-tyre-pressure-and-size-guide where I got the following recommended tyre pressure for some of the following brands:
- Toyota Aygo: 33 psi
- Toyota Yaris: The front tyres should be inflated to 36psi, 35psi for rear tyres
- Toyota Avensis: 16-inch wheels, for speeds of 99mph or less, the front tyres should be inflated to 37psi.
At speeds above 99mph, the front tyres should be inflated to 41psi. The rear tyres should be inflated to 32psi for speeds at or below 99mph and to 37psi for speeds above 99mph
- RAV4: The front and rear tyres of all grades of RAV4 should be inflated to 32psi.
Do the same by checking the recommended tyre pressure for car.
Tyre pressures top safety tips
According to tyre-pressure.com, a dedicated website on tyre safety tips, says “maximum grip on the road is vital for road safety.
This can only be achieved with the correct pressure in your tyres.”
Advantage of having the correct tyre pressure
Correct tyre pressure helps to maintain optimum fuel efficiency. This equates to lower Co2 emissions from your vehicle and helps protect the environment.
The illustration shows how much grip a tyre has on the road depending on its pressure.
Risk involved when it’s below or higher?
Under inflated tyres (lower than recommended tyre pressure) can lead to poor handling of your vehicle. Low pressure on the front axle will increase understeer (fig. 1) whereas low pressure on the rear axle will increase oversteer (fig. 2).
Vehicles with under-inflated tyres have increased rolling resistance that requires more fuel to maintain the same speed.
Over inflated (higher than recommended tyre pressure which is prevalent in Nigeria) and under inflated tyres suffer more damage than those with the correct pressure and need to be changed more often.
