Mr. Mahmoud Abubakar  has emerged the 28th President in the 2016 National Election of the Nigeria Bar Association. Mahmoud, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, succeeds its incumbent President, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), whose two-year tenure ends this month. The new NBA President was a former Kano State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

According to NBA website, Mahmoud polled 3,055 out of available 5,439 votes to emerge winner ahead of his opponent, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, who polled 2,384 votes in NBA’s first electronic voting.

Also, as opposed to its former method of branch delegates voting system, the voting in 2016 was open to all lawyers in the country.

His victory is an avenue for him to implement his four-point agenda:

  1. Recognition of the Legal Profession
  2. Regaining the confidence of the Nigerian people for the legal profession.
  3. Focus on the struggle for a clean, independent Judiciary and I want to struggle for the welfare of our members especially the young members of the profession
  4. Work on the integrity of the NBA itself. We are going to strengthen the branches.

My Covenant with The Bar

During his manifestoes on the floor of Eastern Lawyers’ Forum in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, maintained that Nigeria was facing a most difficult time, “and the Bar has a huge role to play in the resolution of these difficulties.”

Legal profile of Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud

“Let me introduce myself briefly. I have been in the legal profession for 36 years. I spent a good part of my early career serving in the public sector in Kano State Ministry of Justice, and I had risen through the ranks to become Principal State Council, Director of Litigation, Director of Prosecutor, Solicitor General and Attorney General of Kano State before I left for the private sector where I founded the law firm of Dikko and Mahmoud, where I have been serving since then. I have served the NBA in various capacities. I have been chairman of the Kano branch for two terms. I have served the national body in various capacities. For reason of time constraint, I cannot go on listing all the positions.

“I have served this country in several other capacities in the private sector. At the moment, I am the Pro-Chancellor of Kano State University of Science and Technology. I am also the Second Vice President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. I have served on various Board and in Advisory capacities. I am saying these so that you can see my pedigree and the experience that I seek to bring to the leadership of the Bar. I urge you to examine my candidature. I have set out my vision, my mission and programmes in my manifestos and this is available online on our website.

“The four point agenda that I wish to pursue as President of the Bar include Recognition of the Legal Profession, Regaining the confidence of the Nigerian people for the legal profession. And I like to add that the legal profession is losing the confidence of the Nigerian people and we need to do something about this. And this is one of the key areas I want to focus on. I want to focus on the struggle for a clean, independent Judiciary and I want to struggle for the welfare of our members especially the young members of the profession, whom I have described at several fora as facing difficult challenges. The other area is to work on the integrity of the NBA itself. We are going to strengthen the branches. I urge you to key into our vision for a free, independent Bar.

Our country is facing a most difficult time, and the Bar has a huge role to play in the resolution of these difficulties. Although I had been an Attorney General, I had never been aligned to any political party. I am an independent person. Independent minded. A core professional. And these are the values I will bring to the Bar : integrity, professionalism, candour and accountability. And those who know my track record will testify to that. I urge you to support our campaign. Everywhere we had been to in the last several months, we had received overwhelming support. And I urge you to continue to support that vision and to align with me to provide that credible leadership that we so badly need. This is my covenant with all of you. I do not promise any magic. All that I can promise you is my sincere best efforts.

“The weight of the office of the president and the responsibilities of this office are not for my lean shoulders alone. I like all of you to work with me to give this profession a new lease of life. The current president of NBA , Mr. Augustine Alegeh has done very well. He has put us in a new trajectory. And I want to build on that trajectory. “
